The Platinum Rule of Recording

The golden rule is great, but when it comes to your studio, you need to follow the platinum rule as well.

But what is the platinum rule? Good question.

The platinum rule helps you make decisions and make them fast. A lot of time can be wasted in your sessions simply by not following this simple rule.

And since your time is precious, you definitely need to make the most of it and use this rule constantly.

The platinum rule says “after every part you add/change, listen. If you don’t love what you’re hearing, change it.”

Sounds simple, right? But a lot of times we simply trudge through the process, taking little or no time to self evaluate and actually listen to what we’re making.

And that can actually waste time. Because eventually, you’re going to really listen to it and you’re probably not going to like what you hear. So you’ll have to go back and change things then, or just live with a sub-par recording (which nobody likes to do).

Here’s an example of when this pays off. I was working with an artist this week and we were getting some ideas down for the drum part. I threw something together and we listened back. We both liked it, but I knew that something was missing. I listened again, asking myself if I really loved what I was hearing.

I could tell that my client wasn’t super sure he liked the drums, but he was willing to move on. I asked for twenty minutes to change a few things and got to work.

I didn’t have to change much, just a few sounds/patterns, but once we listened back, we instantly knew that it was perfect. It was exactly what the song needed.

Sometimes, you need to just do something a few times before it’s really how you want it. So follow the platinum rule and get better recordings today.

And if you want to build your skills (especially your intuition for knowing when something is awesome), there’s no better way to do it than by sitting down to top-notch sessions and industry pros, walking you through each step of the process.
