Overused Effects – what’s your guilty pleasure?

Everyone has at least one guilty pleasure. Maybe it’s Zac Efron flicks, maybe it’s Madonna. Or if you’re like us, it might be a plug-in. If it is, you’re on the right site.

There have been many overused effects and sounds in music – from the 80’s hair snare to the 90’s pop slap bass. (Seinfeld is exempt from this, of course.)

Probably the most notably overused effect in recent musical history is Antares Auto-Tune. Back when T-Pain released “Rappa Ternt Sanga”, it was hard to not hear this robotic sound on the radio.

But the truth is … *swallow* … I kind of like it. Not all the time, and not even on the entire vocal, but a flare of auto-tune can really add a cool element if it’s used artistically. (Check out “Love Like This” by Natasha Bedingfield. Talk about guilty pleasure.)

The frightening thing is that some people actually try to imitate the robotic voice in real life. No lie. Emma Robinson succeeds, and I can’t decide if it’s cool or scary yet. I’m leaning towards cool, but we’ll see.

So what do you think? Have any funny guilty pleasures you’d care to share?
