Are you sick of working for countless hours on your production, only to have a storm come through, knock out the power, and corrupt your entire session? If you’re not yet, you will be as soon as it happens to you! Don’t wait until it’s too late – take action and be prepared!
But how? Get yourself a UPS. Uninterrupted Power Supply. It’s basically a mini generator that runs for a short time off an internal battery. It’s not going to be enough to keep your gear going while your town loses power for a week in a December blizzard, but it will be enough to let you save and power down without losing your work.
Here’s a link to few different UPS that you might be interested in – there’s obviously quite a range in price, so it’s important to know exactly what you’ll need. It probably isn’t necessary to plug in all of your studio gear, but you’ll want to have your computer, external hard drives, and audio interface plugged in just in case. To figure out what size you’ll need, just make sure you know how much power each unit requires to keep it running, which can usually be found online or in your owners manuals.
I would recommend checking out this unit by Tripp Lite – it’s a great buy and you get a lot of bang for your buck. But don’t worry if this is a little out of the price range – there are definitely cheaper and still valuable options available.
